Rab Kinder Smock: The Return of A Classic

January 4, 2018

This Winter 17/18 sees the return of an iconic piece of winter gear. The Rab Kinder Smock was a firm favourite with climbers in the 90’s and was one of Rab’s best selling items of that era. Originally hand-made in Sheffield, the Kinder Smock was a true classic. And this year, by popular demand, the down smock has been re-released.

Rab Carrington built his company in the 80s on two things; the needs of climbers and mountaineers and practicality. The design of the original Kinder Scout in the 1990s was lead by these two principles, which is why it was so popular amongst the climbing community. The Rab Kinder Smock was just as popular with non-climbing folk too; the relaxed styling was equally appropriate at the local pub as it was at the local crag.

The Revival

Paying homage to the original design, Rab has released an updated version of the Kinder Smock which stays true to the original design but makes use of new materials and technologies. The new Kinder is constructed of a Pertex® Classic outer fabric with Pertex Quantum® lining, and filled with 270g of Nikwax treated hydrophobic down to keep you warm even when you get wet.

I had always loved the design of the original Kinder Smock, so when the new one was released I couldn’t wait to test it out.

The relaxed fit, much like the original, is designed to allow complete freedom of movement when belaying, or to be thrown on as a top layer when it gets really cold. The Kinder doesn’t pretend to be light (708g), nor pack down small. The generous down fill will keep you warm in the harshest conditions, and the large kangaroo pocket is the perfect place to warm your hands up after a chilly send.

Rab Kinder Smock Review

I had always loved the design of the original Kinder Smock, so when the new one was released I couldn’t wait to test it out. Since its arrival I’ve not taken it off. I’ve worn it on short walks in the woods, on trips to the indoor wall, on trips to the shops and pretty much any other occasion you can think of. On a winter wild camp I’ve stuffed it into a compression sack and been grateful for the unrivalled warmth and comfort when the temperature plummeted.

With regards to styling, I think it’s great. The relaxed, boxy fit looks great when worn with jeans and the half zip is a timeless feature. One of my favourite parts of the jacket is the vintage Rab badge on the pocket. The classic shape of the jacket combined with the retro badge look fantastic.

The Rab Kinder Smock is available in red, blue and black (featured). Find out more about the Smock and add one to your winter wardrobe here.
